Itinerary

Experience the tranquillity of the mountains, the serene shores of crystal-clear lakes, and the untouched beauty of nature. Situated at the heart of Carinthia, Villach embraces this rich diversity.

Embark on a journey from Villach along the scenic river Gail, as you cross into Italy from Austria. Nestled within the Italy-Austria-Slovenia triangle, the Canal Valley takes centre stage, with the Italian town of Tarvisio serving as its hub. This region has witnessed the coexistence of Austrians, Slovenians, and Italians for centuries, making it a convergence point for the major European language families.

ca. 40 km

Continuing through Italy, the well-developed cycle path guides you downhill through the Val Canale Valley. As you pedal, take in the breathtaking Friulian alpine landscape, characterized by pristine nature and expansive forests. Your day's destination lies in one of the charming villages nestled at the foothills of the Julian Alps.

ca. 60 km

Exiting the southern end of Val Canale Valley, you'll encounter one of the Friulian-Julian-Venetian region's most captivating historic villages: Gemona del Friuli. The village's focal point, the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is sure to leave a lasting impression. As you journey towards Udine, the landscape transitions to include the first vineyards and vines along the cycle route. Upon reaching Udine, soak in the "dolce vita" as you enjoy a coffee on the Piazza or wander the alleyways, marvelling at the late Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

ca. 60 km

Experience the gentle sirocco breeze as you cycle through expansive reed scenery and alongside charming water canals, leading you to the Gulf of Venice. Pause in the Roman city of Aquileia, often referred to as the "second Rome," before reaching your holiday's final destination. Grado, a beloved Adriatic beach resort, will captivate you with its vast sandy beach, historic harbour, and enchanting narrow alleys lined with delightful restaurants, exuding true Italian charm.

ca. 55 km

You'll depart from the coastline and embark on a cycling journey through the rugged terrain, making your way toward the Gulf of Trieste. Upon returning to the seaside, you'll be treated to awe-inspiring coastal vistas, and a notable highlight of today's ride is the renowned Miramare Castle. The iconic castle and its picturesque surroundings add to the allure of your cycling adventure. Your cycling holiday concludes in the historic port city of Trieste, a fitting and splendid end to your remarkable journey.

ca. 70 km

Are you enjoying Trieste a little longer with an extension or are you going home today?
