About Danube Cycling Holidays

The Danube Cycle Path ranks among Europe’s most iconic rivers, attracting thousands of cyclists who revel in its scenic landscapes and renowned towns. Spanning multiple countries from Germany to the Black Sea, our Danube cycling holidays focus on two key sections: from Passau to Vienna and from Vienna to Budapest.

Despite the river connecting several countries, cycling through Central Europe reveals diverse cultures, noticeable even on shorter stretches like Vienna to Bratislava.

En route, you'll encounter three capital cities—Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest—alongside significantly smaller cities like Linz, Esztergom, and Gyor.

What is the best part of the Danube to cycle along?

The best part of the Danube is subjective, with some sections renowned for city life and cultural richness, while others boast natural wonders like vineyards and dramatic landscapes. The Wachau Valley stands out for its picturesque vineyards and historic sites, including Melk Abbey.

Moreover, bends in the river reveal panoramic vistas and historic castles, notably in Austria and Hungary. The Passau to Linz stretch shines due to its superb cycling infrastructure, scenic beauty, and reliable transport links.

Cyclist-friendly hotels ensure convenience, allowing you to comfortably enjoy breakfast in your cycling gear and securely store your bike.

How long does it take to cycle along the Danube?

The Danube Cycle Path spans over 1700 kilometres, stretching from Germany's Black Forest to Romania's Black Sea. The Passau to Vienna and Vienna to Budapest segments, each around 300 kilometres, are the most popular. This renowned route, among Europe's favourites, offers varied perspectives on cycling duration.

Our itineraries cater best to leisure cyclists, encouraging stops to explore local attractions like Austria's Wachau wine region or the charming Hungarian towns. With mainly flat terrain and a slight descent towards Vienna, it's a comfortably achievable ride, faster for more athletic riders. While it's feasible to cover Passau to Vienna in just 3 days, our 8-day itineraries allow a more immersive experience, ensuring you thoroughly enjoy the journey to Austria's capital.

Is the Danube Cycle Path paved?

The Danube Cycle Path stands out as one of Europe's premier cycling routes, boasting predominantly high-quality paved surfaces along its course. Notably, the path's excellence is most pronounced in Germany and Austria. In Slovakia and Hungary, some stretches may feature less optimal conditions, occasionally incorporating gravel or stone paths. Rest assured; our bikes are well-equipped to navigate these varying terrains and electric bikes are available on all itineraries.

Following the EuroVelo Route 6 (EV6) signs ensures smooth navigation throughout the journey. Yet, for added reassurance, downloadable maps and GPX tracks are available for all Danube cycling holidays. This provision significantly alleviates concerns about straying off the designated route, offering a more relaxed and worry-free cycling experience.
