Details about the cycling holiday around the Salzkammergut Lakes

The Salzkammergut, the pearl of Upper Austria and a patchwork of lakes. Ideal for letting your soul dangle while you cycle through the gently rolling landscape, meadows, and moorland. Your constant companion is of course the bike - and countless lakes. There are five in number. For example the deep green Attersee, ideal for a long swim, or the clear Wolfgangsee with the world-famous "Weißen Rössl". And best of all: During the entire cycle tour you will spend the night in exceptional, charming hotels! You can read more about this under Cycle tours with charm.

The highlights of this Austrian cycling holiday at a glance:

  • Boat trip on the Attersee: A fascinating world of colours, imposing summer villas and regional snack bars await you! Well then, full speed ahead!

  • For particularly sporty people: If cycling is not enough for you, you can take the cable car up the Feuerkogel in Ebensee and dare a tour of the sunny high plateau!

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt: Find Celtic graves, the oldest salt mine in the world and a prehistoric museum in Hallstatt. Get your impression of this picturesque place between the Alps and Lake Hallstatt.

Itinerary

Tour information and bike handover. Stroll today through the famous Getreidegasse and across the imposing Residenzplatz.

The tour goes along the Salzach, then on the disused Ischler Bahn route to Eugendorf. The cycle path continues across lush meadows to Thalgau and to the foot of the Drachenwand, an impressive rock massif that extends into Lake Mondsee. The lakeside cycle path takes you to the centre of the city of the same name, known not only for the musical Sound of Music!

First, you cycle along the banks of the Mondsee to the Attersee. This is the largest lake in the Salzkammergut and is not only known for its deep green colour. Many celebrities from near and far live in stately homes on its banks. Either by boat (only for arrivals from July 1st to August 31st) to Attersee or along the lake shore via Nussdorf and Seewalchen, then through the Aurach Valley to Lake Traunsee to Gmunden with its famous Ort Castle or the ceramic bells in the town hall tower. A few kilometres remain to Traunkirchen, where you will stay overnight.

The cycle path leads along the Traunsee to the saltpan town of Ebensee, from here you follow the Traun to Bad Ischl with its imperial past. Lake Hallstatt is finally reached via the climatic health resort of Bad Goisern. Impressed by the scenery, you cycle along the lake to Hallstatt, the "most beautiful lakeside town in the world". You will stay overnight right in the centre of the world-famous place.

Back along the Traun, you will soon reach Bad Ischl. You should definitely try the sweet specialities (incl.) in the famous Café Zauner today, as our Emperor Franz Josef and his Sissi also enjoyed the Bundt cake here. Strengthened, you cycle onto Lake Wolfgang and enjoy the flair around your famous hotel, the white horse.

You have numerous options for an active day at Austria's most famous lake. We recommend taking the cog railway (on your own) up to the summit of the Schafberg (1782m) with a wonderful all-round view, as well as a boat trip (on your own). A bathing day in crystal clear water is of course a suitable alternative to being active...

On the bike path along the lake to St. Gilgen and on to the deep blue Fuschlsee. From there you go to the idyllic Tiefbrunnau. Again by bike, we continue to the Hintersee and through the Strubklamm to the Wiestal. The trip through the Glasenbachklamm to the Salzach Valley is impressive. Shortly before Salzburg, a detour to Hellbrunn Palace is worthwhile. The destination is the festival and Mozart city of Salzburg with numerous sights.

Route information

The cycle routes are entirely flat on the lake shores and the Salzach. In between, the terrain is mostly hilly. Most of it leads from lake to lake on bike paths and side roads with very little traffic. Only a few, short sections sometimes are on busy streets.
