Details about the cycling tour along the Tauern Cycle Route
Your cycling tour starts in Salzburg and runs along the Salzach River. In Bad Dürnberg you can follow the traces of the "white gold" in the Hallein salt mines. Cultural sights are also covered during this bike tour. Visit the more than 900-year-old Hohen Werden Castle, which towers high above the Salzach Valley on a steep rock cone. If you prefer something cooler, you should plan a visit to the Eisriesenwelt, the largest ice cave in the world. The Großglockner High Alpine Road is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the world.
The next stage is Kaprun, visit the Krimml waterfalls, with a height of 380 m, the Krimml waterfalls are the fifth highest waterfalls in the world. Your cycling tour continues through the Hohe Tauern National Park and the so-called Oberpinzgau. Highlights on the way to Lofer are the Seisenbergklamm and the Lamprechtshöhle near Weißbach. The last stage back to Salzburg leads through the always-quiet Saalachtal. Once you have reached Bad Reichenhall, it is only a short distance to the Mozart city of Salzburg where you may also want to visit the music festival.

Worth knowing about the Tauern Cycle Route
The Tauern cycle route is signposted everywhere and in great detail. The route mainly runs on quiet, paved bike paths and country roads, but sometimes also on busier parts, mostly paved bike paths. You cycle largely in the gentle valleys of the Salzach and Saalach with only slight slopes. Nevertheless, you should bring a little basic fitness with you, but then this bike tour becomes a real experience or opt for the convenience of an E-bike.
Arrive in the culturally rich city. Take plenty of time to stroll through the old town and visit Mozart's birthplace. Your bicycles will be ready at the accommodation you have booked.
You follow the course of the river Salzach and soon reach Hallein. The salt mine, which has been closed since 1989, can be viewed in the show mine. For sports enthusiasts, a detour to the romantic Bluntau Valley is worthwhile. In your stage destination Golling, you should allow enough time to visit the waterfall, which is definitely worth the effort.
On today's stage, you will first cycle to Werfen, where Hohenwerfen Castle towers high above the Salzach. The famous Eisriesenwelt is also worth a visit. In Bischofshofen you can admire the ski jump on which the final of the four-hill tournament is held every year. In St. Johann is the famous Liechtenstein Gorge, a huge natural spectacle with a 50 metre high waterfall at the end of the gorge.
You can quickly reach Bruck an der Glocknerstrasse by bike. The High Alpine Road to the 3,798 m high Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain, can also be 'climbed' by bus from June to September to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe. For the sporty cyclist, there is also a tour around the Zeller See, the quiet cyclists can use this time for a refreshing swim. Only a short distance and you are in Kaprun, today's stage destination. There you have excellent bus connections to the high mountain reservoirs.
After breakfast, take the local Pinzgauer Bahn to Krimml. There you should visit the largest waterfalls in Europe. You can admire this natural spectacle via a well-maintained path. By bike, you cycle back through the Hohe Tauern National Park and the so-called Oberpinzgau. You will enjoy the snow-capped peaks at three thousand meters high along the way.
NB! Please note: Travel by bus to Krimml (train replacement service or shuttle) if repair work on the Pinzgaubahn has not yet been completed on the planned travel date.
You will soon be back at Lake Zell, where you can take a relaxing bath. Via Maria Alm with the famous pilgrimage church, you reach Saalfelden, where you can enjoy your lunch break. Other highlights on the way to Lofer are the Seisenbergklamm and the Lamprechtshöhe near Weißbach.
On your last leg back to Salzburg, you will cycle in the peaceful Saalachtal. The Bavarian town of Bad Reichenhall in the small German corner will enchant you with its southern German flair. Only a short distance and you are back at the starting point of the cycling tour in Salzburg.
