Itinerary

Individual arrival in Stralsund. This ancient Hanseatic city is the gateway to the island of Rügen. The new Rügen Bridge suspension bridge, right next to the old Rügen Dam, impressively connects the mainland with the island.

You cycle over the old Rügen Dam to the island of Rügen in Altefähr. Your route takes you past Stralsund and Kubitzer Bodden and then through the west of the island to Bergen. The tour goes to the National Park "Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft", with an area of about 805 km² the third largest park in Germany and an important breeding ground for several bird species.

ca. 40-52 km

The Rugard in Bergen was once the site of a Slavic castle complex. Today, you can let your gaze wander over the island from the observation tower. Putbus, planned as the residence of Prince Malte zu Putbus, with its unique character, is a nice stopover on today's route. The journey leads along attractive paths to the seaside resorts on Rügen's Baltic coast. Overnight stay in Binz, Sellin, Baabe or Göhren.

ca. 29-34 km

A large wooden gate marks the entrance to Mönchgut, where monks once tried to dig the south of the island away from the main island. In the Zickersche Bergen nature reserve, we recommend you linger for a while on meadows and juniper fields. You will explore this archipelago and have the option to shorten the return journey by train.

ca. 26-36 km

The forested ridge of the Granitz will remind you of small-scale German mountain ranges were it not for the occasional view of the Baltic Sea. The view from the Granitz hunting lodge is particularly impressive. The route is otherwise flat and easy along the beach, cycling from Binz to Mukran/Sassnitz. The ferry port of Mukran (the Muk) is geographically and nautically the shortest route to Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic States. The development of the port was the last major transport project of the former GDR in 1980, here you can find out all about the ships.

ca. 20-45 km

Today you will explore the chalk cliffs, a symbol of the island of Rügen. Visit Jasmund National Park with the Königsstuhl and its chalky adventure world. Walk through ancient beech forests, the habitat of many fallow deer, and enjoy views of the Baltic Sea. Further on, views of Cape Arkona will be visible. You will stay overnight in Trent, Bohlendorf, Wiek, Breege, Juliusruh or surroundings.

ca. 44-77 km

The ferry (included) takes you from Breege through a lagoon landscape to the car-free island of Hiddensee. A short walk to the higher lighthouse, with surrounding views of the whole island and the sea, right through the moorland landscape is worthwhile. In the afternoon, take the ferry back to Stralsund.

After breakfast, during the morning, your cycling adventure on Rügen ends. Or do you extend a few more days to enjoy these beautiful surroundings for longer?

Route information

The ride is almost entirely flat with some small hills in between that are easy to overcome. There is a lot of riding on side roads with quiet traffic. The cycle paths on this tour often alternate between asphalt and sandy soil, and sections also on unpaved paths.
