This cycle tour blends history, culture, and scenic landscapes along the banks of the Neckar River in Germany. Pedal your way through charming streets adorned with historic architecture, visit medieval castles, and explore enchanting vineyards. The cycle route promises a delightful exploration of the region's rich heritage, making it a perfect destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
You'll also have time to explore the city of Heidelberg: A charming German city with a renowned castle, a picturesque Old Town, and a vibrant university culture surrounded by lush landscapes.
Upon arrival in picturesque Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, you will immerse yourself in the Palatinate. Celebrate the start of your holiday with a glass of cool Riesling, after all, you are in the middle of the largest Riesling-growing region in the world. The first stage leads to Germersheim via the cathedral city of Speyer. The medieval fortress with large ramparts still characterises the cityscape today.
Before heading to Neckarstadt Heidelberg on day 3, you should make a longer stop at Schwetzingen Castle and inspect the beautiful castle gardens. A true smorgasbord of cultures opens up here: a garden mosque, French and English influences and the Japanese cherry blossoms, which transform the complex into a sea of blossoms every spring. In the further course of the journey, you will discover, among other things, the half-timbered houses in Ladenburg and the cathedral city of Worms.
Speyer Cathedral: The cornerstone of the world-famous Imperial and Mariendom was laid around 1030. From the Palatinate War of Succession to the French Revolution, the monumental building survived many historical cuts and is today the largest surviving Romanesque church.
Idyllic along the arms of the old Rhine: Once winding and full of loops, the Rhine was gradually straightened to make it usable for shipping. Nature has reclaimed the old Rhine in many places and is particularly picturesque. Due to the shallow depth, many aquatic plants thrive here, leading to numerous bird species.
Vibrant Heidelberg: The city can be enjoyed magnificently on the banks of the Neckar. Tip: You can put your feet in the sand on the city beach. Whether canoe, motorboat or boat trip - the possibilities on the water are numerous. The castle and the Philosophenweg are also part of every city tour of Heidelberg.
Small winegrowing villages along the Wine Route: Bad Dürkheim, Deidesheim & Co., as the home towns of Riesling, combine tradition and modernity. Enjoy an innovative organic wine in front of the typical half-timbered backdrop and look back on your journey in a relaxed manner.
Mostly on level ground. Only in the vineyards between Worms and Neustadt are there smaller inclines.
