Arrive at Porto airport and transfer to the starting hotel for a welcome meeting and transfer of the rental bikes. Afterwards, enjoy beautiful and authentic Porto. The cradle of Port Wine with its Port houses in Gaia and the narrow steep alleys and stairs in the historic Ribeira district. Many historic buildings can be found on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visit the world-famous Lello bookshop, the magical "Harry Potter" library. (approx. €3 per person). Take the cable car Teleférico de Gaia to Vila Nova de Gaia and visit one of the many wine cellars (there are over 50 exporters!) for a tour and Port tasting.
Tip: Go wine tasting in the port cellars of Calem, after a tour of the production process in the cellar, fado singers and singers perform. The performance and tasting of the port take about an hour. (approx. €23 per person)
This morning's bike ride will take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city to the peaceful and tranquil Atlantic coast. Ride peacefully along the ocean, enjoy the salty sea air and cycle through vast pine forests. At the end of this stage, you will reach the town of Furadouro, known for its hospitality and excellent fish.
Be sure to visit the small town of Costa Nova today with its picturesque centre and multicoloured "striped houses". We continue this journey through the nature reserve "São Jacinto Dunes" a lagoon with pristine beaches, acacias, wild pines and floodplains with colourful boats "moliceiros". We cross the Ria by Moliceiro boat (approx. €13 per person) to Aveiro.
Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal with its canals and Moliceiros boats. Along the canal, you will find several Art Nouveau buildings, in the monastery Convento de Jesus you can admire the gilded carvings (Talha Dourada) in the church. Taste the symbol of the city, Ovos Moles, a delicious and sweet snack sold in small wooden barrels or covered with a layer of host dough, as well as the eel dish Escabeche.
You leave Aveiro and cycle along the canal that gave the city the nickname "Venice of Portugal". Enjoy nature while driving through green fields. In Praia de Mira then stop at Mira Beach and discover the typical colourful wooden fishermen's houses called "Palheiros". Behind the dunes of the surf beach and the rough Atlantic Ocean is the forest "Mata Nacional" where pine scent predominates, and take a walk along the lagoon and enjoy the scenery.
In the afternoon you will be transferred from Praia de Mira to your overnight stay in Figueira da Foz. This leaves enough time to enjoy the popular "great golden beach" or climb the Serra da Boa Viagem mountain range to enjoy the panoramic view from Miradouro da Vela, where you can see the city and the salt banks of the Mondego.
Today you will discover the Silver Coast. You will cycle along extensive beaches and through pine forests and feel the unspoilt nature of this region. Planted in the 15th century, the forest was mainly used for shipbuilding in the Portuguese Age of Discovery. Today an immense coastal forest. Continue along the "Estrada Atlantica" the Atlantic cycle path to São Pedro de Moel with one of the most beautiful beaches on the Portuguese coast where aristocratic houses are lined in shell shapes and you can enjoy a beautiful sunset.
Discover the traditional Nazaré. One of the most famous fishing villages in Portugal and the Portuguese beach with the most colourful fishing traditions. Here you will see fishermen's wives who are still dressed in seven skirts, according to tradition. You should therefore not leave here without having tasted a delicious fish dish. From Sítio, a 318m high rock that rises steeply from the sea, you have one of the most beautiful views of the Portuguese coast.
At the end of the day, you will arrive in the medieval town of Obidos, charmingly surrounded by impressive walls that make it look like a medieval movie set. Explore the architectural beauties and enjoy the flair of one of Portugal's most picturesque and best-preserved settlement towns. Amid a labyrinth of narrow streets and charming whitewashed houses and flower-decked windows, you will find the well-preserved castle and romantic love stories. The inner man is certainly not forgotten here. Taste the most famous dish of the local gastronomy, the “caldeirada de peixe da Lagoa de Óbidos” a fish stew with wine from the Oeste wine region and for dessert the famous cherry liqueur “Ginjinha de Óbidos” that you drink from a chocolate cup.
Obidos – Lisbon
Today you will not leave the city on two wheels but on four wheels, because a transfer will take you to Lisbon. This gives you plenty of time to discover this beautiful city on the Tagus and its many sights because there is a lot to discover!
Lisbon, the city is located on seven hills. The Fado district of Alfama is a maze of steep streets, and many stairs and has a picturesque appearance. The view is fantastic and there are several viewpoints such as Miradouro de Santa Luzia, at the Santa Luzia church and Castelo de São Jorge at 110m altitudes. A ride on the pre-war, iconic yellow tram 28 takes you along the historic districts of Graca, Alfama and Baixa for about €3 per person. A ride with the most beautiful lift in the world, the cast iron Santa Justa Lift, approx. €5 is very special and tastes the Pastéis de Belém. If you have time to spare, be sure to visit the trendy and ultra-modern ocean-themed Parques das Nações district on the Tagus.
Return trip or extension
After breakfast, this impressive cycling trip ends or you can make use of an extension and enjoy all the beautiful things this city has to offer.
You will mainly cycle on flat coastal paths, except for the last two stages, where there are still a few short climbs to cycle. You mainly cycle on asphalt paths, agricultural paths and Ecovias (typical Portuguese bicycle paths), these are car-free cycling routes built over former railway lines. These stages do not pose a problem for cyclists who cycle regularly.
